Arithmancy Lesson {Open, Students!}

Dorian sat behind his desk double checking that he had everything that he needed for the day's lesson, and recounting to make sure he had enough copies. With a touch of magic it would be easy to replicate more copies, but once the lesson started he didn't want to be faffing around trying to make more. After a final count, he was satisfied he had everything he needed.

And just in good time to, as students started to make their way into the class. He waited until everyone was in and the clock struck the hour before starting his lesson, casting a glance at the door to make sure that there were no stragglers. "G'morning, all." He stood and tapped his wand against the blackboard, watching as a the chart they would be needing for the day appeared. "We'll be using the basic chart today, which you should all be familiar with. To start with, we're going to do something easy. Use the chart shown here to work out your personality number using your first and last name. When you've done that, write it on a piece of paper-" He flicked his wand and one of the piles of paper from his desk lept into the air, a sheet landing in front of each student. "-and bring it to the front." Hopefully, this task would only take them ten minutes at most to complete.

((OOC: Hey guys! Arithmancy lesson for all students! Age/year doesn't matter, just join in. Any amount can join, there's no limit. The task is simple, use the chart provided to work out your personality number. Each letter has a numerical value associated with it. You add up all those numbers, and keep adding them until you get a single digit between 1 and 9.

It's easy enough to do! Do that, write it down on the paper Dorian gave you, and put it on his desk. Once done, Dorian will reply again with the next instruction of the lesson! I'm not going to say exactly how long it'll be before he replies again, it's going to depend on how many replies this gets/how many join in! Have fun!))

James made his way up to the sixth floor for his first lesson of the day, Arithmancy. Back in third year when he'd been selecting his elective choices, he'd been unsure about Arithmancy because it was, basically, a different form of Divination. He realized pretty quickly that he'd had nothing to worry about. Arithmancy was numbers and logic, not picking imaginary pictures out of a lump of tea leaves. He couldn't grasp the concept of divination or why anyone would choose to take it, but Arithmancy? He really enjoyed it.

He took a seat in the second row when he entered the class, pulling out a notebook and pen and setting them on the desk ready for the lesson to begin, the date already noted in the top corner of the page. Before long, the class had filled up and most of the seats were taken. James threw a smile to the student who sat beside him, just as Professor Winston began the class. 

The instructions were simple enough, so James pulled his note book towards him and wrote his name across the top line, and started lining up the numbers from the chart underneath. He was actually really glad they didn't have to use their middles names for this, since he had a weird enough surname as it was.

That done, James looked closely through it again, making sure that there were no mistakes  there. The last thing he needed was to have worked one of his numbers out wrong. It would through the whole calculation off track if he did that.

The Ravenclaw awoke with a start, realizing he over slept yet again. For a Ravenclaw he was awfully, tardy when it came to being ontime. Ishmael made a made dash for the prefects bathroom, and quickly showered. He hastily made a dash for the Ravenclaw robes and made a dash for the Arithmancy class.

He was knocking over students, barking order and trying his hardest to make his way to the class at a reasonable hour. My his estimation he was only 5 minutes late but, he didnt want to get in trouble with the professor of all things. If he was reprimanded to much they made take away his prefect status. Ishmael made his way to the classroom,and open the door as quietly as he could.

It was a shame that he was out of breath. He quickly moved passed students. and took a seat and noticed a problem on the board. He quickly got out his quill, and ink and started to scribble quickly.

[ARIANA MORGAN]

Ariana was supposedly looking forward to Arithmancy, but she knew that it would just be like any other lesson. It wasn't her favorite, and neither was it her worst. She strolled up onto the sixth floor, in good time, to the classroom and walked in sitting down at an empty desk. For a Slytherin she was very prompt to her lessons, except when she decided to skive off of those lessons she didn't like.

As soon as the work was set, Ariana scribbled down her workings and answer on the piece of parchment provided. It was simple enough.

5+9 = 14
1+3 = 5

After completion of the task, she did as was told and handed her parchment to the professor at the front then returned to her seat to wait for the rest of the class to finish the easy and simple first task.

Raphael whistled as he made his way casually along the hallway, not in any apparent rush to get anywhere, despite the fact that he was already five minutes late to class. Eh, it was just Arithmancy. It wasn't like he was going to need to read numbers to survive once he finished school, was he? He didn't even know why he took the class, aside from the fact that it had looked easy at the time. 

When he finally slipped into the class everyone was already hard at work doing... something. Raphael wasn't entirely sure what they were doing, but it clearly had something to do with the numbers on the board. In his usual, carefree manner, Raphael sent a grin and a wave towards the professor before flopping down into a seat, noticing afterwards that he had sat beside a Slytherin girl (Ariana). He grinned again, dropping his back and leaning back in his seat. "Alright hot stuff? What's going on here, then?" Eh, he would flirt with anyone given half a chance.

After double checking that he'd got all the numbers right, James moved on the the next part of the work, writing his equations out in full so if he made any mistakes he'd be able to see exactly where he went wrong. He didn't expect to get it wrong, but you could never be too careful, especially when you were in class. Besides, it would be easier to revise later of if he could see exactly what he needed to do.

Nine. James reached for the parchment that they had been told to write their final answers on and did so, taking the folded piece of paper to the desk at the front of the room. He wondered what the next part of the lesson was going to involve.

Dorian set the class off and took a seat as his desk, pulling out a registered to check off who was there and who wasn't. He usually kept a lot of lists and records of things, because when you knew Arithmancy well enough you could see it in anything. By keeping a registered of what students turned up when he could do some maths with it later on in the year, and see what results their attendance told him.

One name jumped out as being absent from his list, but Dorian didn't make him absent straight away. If he knew that boy he'd knew that he'd be along any -  "Mr Dane, you're late. Again." He marked the boy down as late and stored the register away, before casually flicking his wand and sending a piece of paper towards the boy. "Would you rather I take point, or give you detention? That's every lesson this week you've turned after your peers. Yet, looking around, you are not the only Hufflepuff in this class, so we can't blame that for your inability to arrive punctually to lessons."

Dorian sent a smile to each student that handed in their papers, then when he was satisfied that everyone had completed the task, he send around the next pile of papers he'd had on his desk, which were more or less identical to the first. "This time I want you to do the same thing again, but this time I want you to find your Heart Number using only the vowels in your name, and then your social number using only the consonants."


((OOC:  Thanks you those who joined! This would have been more fun with more people joining in, but we can work with what we have! If anyone still wants to join it's not too late, just say you were already here and work out your personality number before your heart and social numbers! The way to do the next two are exactly the same as above, except one uses only vowls and one uses only consonants. Give it a go! We'll get to the fun stuff soon!))

Sarah walked quickly down the halls of Hogwarts to compensate for having struggled to find her robe - which she didn't, deciding that bugger it, she could go without it for now - causing her to be a bit late. Not a lot, just a little bit late, and Professor Winston wouldn't mind being just five minutes late, would he? Let's hope. She opened the door slightly, slipping in just when he mentioned what they had to do. Logic and numbers came easily to Sarah, most of the time, so Arithmancy was never much of a worry. use chart, name, numbers, bring to front, got it. She mouthed an earnest 'sorry' at Professor Dorian before sitting down at her seat, a paper waiting for her.

She double checked her work, triple checked, because it seemed her name was easy enough to let her skip a step, before writing the number 'Personality number - 5' on a piece of paper and put it on his desk, with another mouthed 'sorry' just to make sure he knew the extend of her regret on being late. She wasn't one for breaking rules. Not really. Some rules were just asking to be broken. When everyone was done, it seemed they weren't completely that; there was more to this assignment. Sarah hoped it would be him explaining what the heck these personality numbers mean. But before that, they had to work out other numbers for their heart and sociability. Sarah guessed the former of hers would be much higher than the latter; as much as she cared for people, she was awkward, yet loud and chatty. Weird, basically. Back to work:

'What an amazing amount of vowels you have there, Sar,' she thought, rolling her eyes to herself, a soft smile on her face as she worked quietly.

'Hmm,' Sarah thought as she studied her numbers. Seems she was wrong. She was more social than she thought. If, of course, her assumption that the higher the number the better was correct. Looking up, she wanted to see if anyone else were handing their answers in, since he hadn't specified and she didn't want to look like an idiot. It was a good class though - interesting and fun - and she was very curious to see the meaning of her numbers.

"Mr Dane, you're late. Again. Would you rather I take point, or give you detention? That's every lesson this week you've turned after your peers. Yet, looking around, you are not the only Hufflepuff in this class, so we can't blame that for your inability to arrive punctually to lessons."

Raphael just grinned as he chose his seat, not at all worried about what the professor was saying. "A wizard is never late, professor. He arrives precisely when he means to." Good old Mr. D. He wouldn't take points or give him detention, he was too nice for that. He was all talk, most of the time. Still, he was a decent bloke. 

Raphael supposed he should probably do the work. Ick. He pulled the sheet of paper towards him and scribbled some notes down on the it to work it out, then scribbled it out before writing the final number in.
